From idea to deployed — the honest guide
agent37.club
The truth is in the middle. AI dramatically accelerates building — if you know what you're doing. This session is the honest playbook.
| Phase | AI Role | Best Tool |
|---|---|---|
| Idea | Brainstorm, research market, find gaps | Claude chat, web search |
| Spec | Write PRD, define data model, plan architecture | Claude (Opus for architecture) |
| Prototype | Scaffold app, generate boilerplate, build UI | Claude Code, v0, bolt.new |
| Iterate | Add features, fix bugs, write tests | Claude Code, Cursor |
| Polish | CSS, copy, responsive, error handling | Claude Code + Haiku for quick fixes |
| Ship | Deploy config, CI/CD, monitoring | Claude Code + platform CLI |
| Tool | Best at | Weakness | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | Full-stack, terminal-native, complex codebases | No visual editor | $20-100/mo |
| Cursor | VS Code feel, multi-file edits, composer mode | Slower on large refactors | $20/mo |
| v0 (Vercel) | UI prototyping, React components, design → code | Frontend only | Free tier |
| bolt.new | Full-stack in browser, instant preview | Limited customization | Free tier |
| Lovable | Non-coders, visual-first, Supabase integration | Opinionated stack | $20/mo |
Our pick for this session: Claude Code. Terminal-native, works with any stack, and you already set it up last week.
Rule of thumb: If you can describe the feature in 2 sentences, AI will nail it. If you need a page to explain it, expect to iterate a lot.
A minimal bookmarking app. Save links with tags, search them later. Deployed and shareable.
# The prompt we'll give Claude Code: Build a bookmarking app called "Link Shelf" with: - Next.js + TypeScript - SQLite via better-sqlite3 - Add link: URL + title + tags - Search by title or tag - Clean, minimal UI - Dark/light mode toggle - Deploy to Vercel
# Step 1: Create the project mkdir link-shelf && cd link-shelf && git init # Step 2: Write a CLAUDE.md (from last session!) claude /init # Step 3: Give Claude the spec claude # > "Build a bookmarking app called Link Shelf with Next.js, # TypeScript, and SQLite. Add link form (URL, title, tags), # search by title or tag, clean minimal UI with dark mode. # Use better-sqlite3 for the DB, server actions for mutations." # Claude will: # 1. npx create-next-app # 2. Install dependencies # 3. Create DB schema + migration # 4. Build components, pages, API routes # 5. Wire everything together
Key: A good spec prompt is worth 10 follow-up correction prompts. Be specific about stack, features, and constraints upfront.
# Fix issues, add features one at a time # "The tag filtering doesn't work when # I click a tag. Fix the handler." # "Add a delete button with confirmation # dialog on each link card." # "Make the search debounced - 300ms # delay before querying." # "Add keyboard shortcut: Cmd+K to # focus the search bar." # "Write tests for the bookmark CRUD # operations."
Anti-pattern: "Make it look professional and add all the features." This produces bloated, untestable code. Small steps win.
# Deploy to Vercel (the easy path) npm i -g vercel vercel # Follow prompts → live URL in 60 seconds # Or Cloudflare Pages (free, edge) npx wrangler pages deploy .next # Or Railway (if you need a real DB) railway init && railway up
Pro tip: Ask Claude to set up the deploy config. "Configure this project for Vercel deployment with the right build settings."
| Platform | Free Tier | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Vercel | 150K fn calls/mo | Next.js apps |
| Cloudflare | 100K Workers/day | Edge, static + API |
| Railway | $5 credit/mo | Backends + DBs |
| Netlify | 100GB BW/mo | Static + serverless |
| Fly.io | ~$2/mo min | Containers, global |
| Task | Without AI | With AI |
|---|---|---|
| Auth flow | 4-8 hours | 30 min |
| CRUD API | 2-4 hours | 15 min |
| Test suite | 2-3 hours | 20 min |
| Landing page | 4-6 hours | 45 min |
| Deploy setup | 1-2 hours | 5 min |
The fix: Always review. Always test. AI writes the first draft — you're the editor.
| Task type | AI effect |
|---|---|
| Boilerplate / CRUD | 3-5x faster |
| New feature (clear spec) | 2-3x faster |
| Bug fix (known cause) | 1.5-2x faster |
| Complex refactor | ~same speed |
| Novel algorithm / perf | Slower (context overhead) |
The best product is the one that exists.
